Chances are you are trying to work efficiently, getting as much as possible done in a day, hoping to tick off all items on your to-do list.
And while being productive may give you a sense of accomplishment, it may be the case that at the end of the week, you still did not finish everything you set out to do. Maybe there is still some work left. Or maybe you regret not spending more time with your family, or on your own hobby or personal project. Maybe next week you’ll have a bit more time.
In his book “4000 weeks” Oliver Burke challenges us to change our perspective on time and on productivity. I can really recommend it (if you can find the time to read it ;-)).
He offers practical advice, based on a very simple fact:
Your time here on Earth is limited.
Burke’s view: If you can accept this fact, you can start shaping your life accordingly.
- You can let go of the hope of being able to do everything (simply impossible)
- You can stop trying to fit as many activities in the time that you have. Rather, you can find ways to be more present in the activities you do
- You can examine what truly matters to you, and focus your time accordingly
Living more purposefully, rather than more efficiently, can help bring more peace of mind, and lead to a greater sense of fulfillment.
